What are the pros and cons of each group?

Answer #1

Many of the advertised jobs for Korean are working with children.

From kindergarten up to high school there are many hagwons (institutes), private, and public schools out there. If you’ve never taught kids before, you’ll find that a year can make a big difference and if you don’t like kindergarten, you might love teaching first grade.

Getting a job teaching adults can be a bit difficult. There are college and university positions out there, but they usually require a couple years experience, an MA, or both. Adult hagwon positions are also out there, but you’ll have to keep your eye out.

To be honest, either you love working with kids or you hate it. It’s a personal thing. If you teach in Korea, even if it’s at a primarily adult-focussed school, you will undoubtedly have to teach children.
I personally liked adults better. I am a type A person, and I like my classes to be “efficient”. Teaching children always has the element of behavioural issues, so it wasn’t as efficient to teach them as with the adults. Adults want to be there and I found them to be easier to keep interested. That being said, some of my best friends were amazing teachers for children and really loved it. It’s far more creative and fun teaching children, I found. But you need to like being around kids. Enough said.
Good luck!
