Where should I stay for the year – in an urban or a rural environment?

Answer #1

Good question – city lights or peaceful countryside?

Decide if you’d like to live in a bustling city or the quiet countryside. Westerners tend to flock to bigger cities such as Seoul, Busan, Daegu, or Daejeon as they have many of the amenities that Western cities have.

That being said, if you’d prefer to experience real Korea and be one of the few Westerns in town, then the countryside is for you.

Living in the country is a great way to learn the language.

Unless you are an introvert who doesn’t like to socialize much, I would say go with a big city. I lived in Seoul for 2 years and loved it. You can choose how much you want to get involved in Korean life, but there are enough westerners around to make life very comfortable and easy. I lived in a city south of Seoul for a month during my second year, and I found I just went home every night and watched a movie by myself because there were no other westerners around to spend time with, and all the Koreans went home to their families. So I went to Seoul every weekend.
There’s enough “Korean culture” in the big cities if you want to get involved, and you can always explore smaller towns on weekends. I would think an entire year in a small town would be lonely with no one sharing your culture.
Good luck!
